So, a long time ago, back before www.NeueMinistry.com didn’t redirect to www.NeueResources.com, I wrote an article titled, “How to Sell the Son of God.” When NeueMinistry published it they retitled it “How to Sell Jesus.” Well, when that site shut down and began redirecting, the article was lost somewhere out there in cyberspace.
So, I asked Matthew Paul Turner if he was interested in posting it on his blog. We went back and forth on it for a little bit and I did a lot of editing on it, but ultimately I decided to try publishing it elsewhere. Well, as it turns out, RelevantMagazine.com was kind enough to put it up on their site.
Aside from accomplishing a goal I’ve had since I first starting writing a couple years ago (that is, getting an article published on the Relevant site), I’m excited about the conversation that the article is producing.
Let me give you a quick rundown before I direct you to read it on Relevant’s site and interact: The article is based on the premise that what we as Christians do, and the way we represent Jesus Christ, actually matters. Perhaps more than we think. Perhaps even frighteningly so. See, I believe that when Christians do not represent Christ well, we may actually be pushing others away from Jesus Christ, potentially even to the point where they ultimately reject Christ.
As you may have guessed, many have taken issue with that. Many do not think the Bible supports the notion that we have the kind of power to keep someone away from Christ. This, they say, would give someone an “excuse” to not believe and who knows if Jesus would accept this excuse. Further, God is bigger than us (no argument there) and our participation in the Kingdom is not one where we bear the responsibility to save others. Of course, I recognize we are not Jesus Christ…we can’t save anyone…but I think we can make it possible for others to come to Christ and I think it possible to prevent them from doing so as well.
So, that’s the center of the controversy. What do you think?
